History of Tudor Watches

HANS WILSDORF'S INTUITION BIRTH OF THE BRAND

“For several years I have been pondering the idea of producing a watch that our experts can sell for more affordable prices than our Rolex watches, while also meeting the reliability standards for which Rolex is renowned. I decided to set up a separate company to manufacture and market this new watch. It's called the TUDOR watch.” - H. Wilsdorf

In February 1926, the company "Veuve de Philippe Hüther", a watch manufacturer and trader, registered the trademark "The TUDOR" on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf. Wilsdorf of Geneva received exclusive usage rights from the company.

THE FIRST TUDOR HOURS IN AUSTRALIA

The first watches had a simple TUDOR signature on their dials, with the upper line of the letter "T" extended above the other letters. Rarely, the Rolex name was also used in some pieces. Until the brand gained autonomy in its field, Rolex would effectively ensure the technical and aesthetic quality of TUDOR watches. Watches signed by TUDOR included models for both men and women. Models often had rectangular, cylindrical or chamfered edges. The distribution rights for TUDOR watches, which were allocated to the Australian market, were given in 1932 to Willis, who was tasked with distributing the watches to the best jewelers in the country.

TUDOR “CATANACH’S”

The chrome-plated rectangular clock with beveled edges shown here demonstrates the kind of product TUDOR created in its early years. This watch features a two-tone, two-section cream-coloured dial with luminous Arabic numerals, baton hour and minute hands made of luminous material and blued steel, a minute counter and a small seconds hand located at the 6 o'clock position. Its cylindrical caliber was distinguished by three red rubies on its top plate. Founded in Melbourne in 1874, Catanach's Jewelers is one of Australia's oldest jeweler families.

HANS WILSDORF TAKES BACK THE “THE TUDOR” BRAND

The company “Veuve de Philippe Hüther” transferred the brand “The TUDOR” to Hans Wilsdorf on October 15, 1936. During this period, the rose of the TUDOR dynasty appeared on the dials. This logo, placed inside a shield, symbolized the unfailing unity of strength and grace, the strength of the watch and the beauty of its lines.

“MONTRES TUDOR S.A.” ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COMPANY

Hans Wilsdorf knew right after the Second World War that it was time to grow and give the brand its own identity. Thus, on March 6, 1946, "Montres TUDOR S.A." specializing in both men's and women's watches. founded his company. Rolex would guarantee technical, aesthetic and functional features as well as distribution and after-sales services.
